Beyond The Twilight Saga lies an unexplored plethora of vampire romances that can satisfy all your lustful reading needs. I’ve compiled a list here that are full of irresistibly charming, strong, and at times morally grey heroes and heroines with steamy chemistry. I hope these reads help to satisfy your desires, and possible blood lust….
1.Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
A gritty and dark take on the vampire romance genre, Vampire Academy revolves around Rosa and Lisa who are on the run from the Academy but unfortunately are hunted down and forced back into the academy. From then on, it is a typical high school drama and to top off the girls’ problems, they are also on the run (yet again) from a vampiric clan who are baying for their blood!
2. The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
Without Anne Rice, there would be no Twilight or Sookie Stackhouse (the series from which True Blood was adapted) and even the classic ‘Interview with a Vampire’ (featuring a young and irresistible Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as vampires) is adapted from her series The Vampire Chronicles. It combines passion, romance, and desire. Trust me when I say this series can satisfy all your lusty vampire needs.
3. The Axe and the Throne by M.D. Ireman
The author creates an engrossing world filled with suave, unremorseful heroes and deep introspective villains. The novel boasts of believable characters who are capable of unthinkable actions and have unique names such as Titon, Keethro and Annora who are very unforgettable. Ireman also uses masterful misdirection and there are plenty of WTF moments that will give a jolt to readers and leave them reeling in horror and shock! The novel is also bereft of tropes used in other vampire romances and instead is best described as ‘not an ordinary fairy-tale romance’.
4. Companions of the Night by Viva Vande Valde
This novel is described as ‘spine tinglingly scary but also thought provoking at the same time’. However, whether it gives you the ‘spine tingles’ or makes you think is up to you, so you might want to grab a copy and dig in to find out. The novel boasts of complex plots and characters with no overly descriptive or long-drawn-out paragraphs with an easy flow thus making it a quick read. There is also action, romance, suspense galore and even a hint of humor.
5. Dark Hunters by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Unlike other stereotypic fare in this genre, Dark Hunter has some remarkably well sketched out heroes with a dark side who are not your regular ‘good looking boy toys’ but in fact are written as ‘good bad boys’. Don’t let their Greek God-esque bodies deceive you as they are morally grey characters. The book also features strong heroines and intricate romance plots, so if this is something you crave, then Dark Hunter is for you!
6. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter by Lowell Hamilton
Anita Blake is a supernatural policewoman who is on the prowl, taking down criminal vampires lurking about. If that isn’t enough to grab your attention, I don’t know what will! Packed with a gripping plot, passion, sexual tension and steamy sex, this series is also described as ‘graphically pornographic’ in nature….so keep out of rich of underage kids!
7. SweetBlood by Pete Hauptman
This novel will unleash the inner goth in you. Described as one of the best misunderstood goths coming of age stories, Sweet Blood is the tale of a 16-year-old diabetic goth girl who is on a downward spiral. She is lured by an intelligent but creepy cyber vampire online and from then on, this is a fun read which breaks free from the typical ‘good girl falls for bad boy’ trope and instead adds a nerdy ‘cyber twist’ to it!
8. Dark Prince by Christine Feehan
Raven Whitney is a psychic who is on the run from a serial killer whom she’d helped the police in tracking down. Along the way, she develops a strange but strong romance with Prince Mikhail Dubrinsky who is of an ancient species and helps her hide in the Carpathian Mountains. But, alas, their lives are endangered by a race that is out to wipe the Carpathians out of existence and the duo are also on their radar! Readers will find this to be a fun, but dark and captivating read.
9. The Awakening by L.J. Smith
This is part of the series which inspired the TV adaptation of Vampire Diaries and follows Elena Gilbert who is trapped in a passionate love triangle between two warring brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore who are poles apart (with Stefan being the good one and Damon being the rotten fruit of the family). Elena is joined on her dangerous journey by her friends and a handful of witches and werewolves who also inhabit the supernatural realm. This is a tale of love, death and survival.
10. The Merzetti Effect by Norah Wilson
Delano, a doctor, finds himself under attack from his rival Radak who is also out to get his lover, a nurse named Ainsley who possesses a unique genetic gift. The reason behind their rivalry is because Delano, after 100 years, has perfected a vaccine that will keep vulnerable mortals safe from lurking rogue vampires. The title of the book is derived from the Merzetti Family whose blood (known for its vampire resistant properties) is used by Delano to create this antidote.
11. Angel’s Blood by Nalini Singh
This novel is part of the Guild Hunter series and revolves around our fearless and smart heroine, vampire hunter, Elena Deveraux who is hired by archangel Raphael to hunt down a fallen archangel. She is thrust into the midst of a murder spree and has to go up against a powerful and deadly being in a mission that pushes her to her limits and could get her killed! If you crave a blend of vampires, angels, lust and love, then this is the book for you!
12. The Fell of Dark by Caleb Roehrig
This is thriller novelist Caleb Roehrig’s first foray into the world of vampire romance and focuses on Auggie, a gay mortal who dwells in Fulton Heights which is a haven for vampires due to its abundance of mystic energy fields. He is enamoured by a pansexual vampire, but turns out that their love is forbidden. However, when an ancient evil force awakens and threatens lives in Fulton Heights, it is up to Auggie and his fanged lover to save the inhabitants. If you’re tired of heterosexual vampire romance and want to mix it up, then check out this LGBTQIA+ themed vampire romance!
With that, we’ve come to the end of this list and I hope that you sink your teeth right into some of these picks. Enjoy!
