If you don’t feel like going out trick or treating and just want to spend a quiet Halloween at home with family and friends, then we highly recommend checking out a bunch of board games from our spook-tastic compilation that we’ve come up with for you with oodles of love and plenty of ooze….
Ghost Stories
A village is overpowered by a legion of ghosts who are on an evil quest to gather the ashes of Wu-Tang, Lord of Hell in a bid to resurrect him. This strategy-based adventure game involves players who take on the role of Taoist monks and work together to exorcise the ghosts before this evil quest comes to fruition.
Phantom Ink
This game is currently under construction, but you can avail of a pro copy of the same for $25 by backing it on Kickstarter or set the ball rolling with a pledge of $3 and receive a print and play copy of the game. It is best described as a cross between games such as Mysterion and Decrypto. Players take on the role of the medium and attempt to decipher clues sent to them from the afterlife by a team member playing as a ghost. As they commune with the ghost, they must thwart attempts of rival team members who can also see the clues and might reach the conclusion faster. As a result, the team member playing as the spirit must commune and reveal their secrets in a creative and in the least obvious manner. Players can note clues down using a notepad that is included with the game or use a secret word card provided by the spirit and can interrupt the ghost by yelling out ‘silencio’ as the safe word if they crack the ghostly message earlier. The first medium to decipher their spirit’s secret or the first team member to successfully answer the questions that are posed to them win!
Voice of the Mummy
That every voiceover that you’ll hear throughout the game is of The Mummy itself, which instructs players throughout the game as they embark on a quest to collect jewels and avoid traps along the way.
Seance
Throughout this game, players receive instructions via the disembodied voice of old Uncle Everett as they scramble to find the items that he left for his next of kin in his last will. The game is best described as a cross between a scavenger hunt and a creepy to-do list.
Yeti
This game is fun for the whole family and is also kid-friendly. Players compete as mountaineers attempting to build their climber’s team, scoring better climbing equipment, hiring Sherpas who will help them on their quest as they track down the Yeti using clues such as footprints and blurry photographs. The mission is to not only track down the Yeti but also to collect the most points by completing the aforementioned tasks.
Barnabas Collins Dark Shadows Game
Players must construct a glow-in-the-dark skeleton on a scaffold using items retrieved from the tiny coffin of vampire Barnabas Collins. Using a spinner allows them to acquire stakes and other additional equipment. The game also includes a set of plastic fangs, so in case you didn’t have a Halloween costume, now you’re all set in that aspect too!
Which witch?
Oh no, players are trapped in a 3D model of a mansion that is the abode of wicked witches such as Wanda the Wicked and Ghoulish Gerty and must figure out a way to escape by moving their child-shaped pawn pieces across the board. They can draw cards to turn a mouse, but beware of cards that might freeze you in your place or, worse still, the infamous ‘whammy card’! If used correctly, it can send a whammy ball rolling straight through the chimney and crashing into one of the rooms of the house, such as the Witch’s Kitchen, Spell Cell, or Broom closet. But the unlucky ones will suffer if the whammy ball knocks into a player piece and will have to move backwards across the board.
Green ghost
Who doesn’t love board games with booby traps galore? And what’s better is that this game is a one of its kind glow in the dark game featuring a luminous board. The green ghost spinner points players in the direction of a game board that is built on stilts and resembles a graveyard and helps them reach their goal- of finding twelve ghostly children. But beware! Players are prone to falling down open graves (holes in the board) wherein they will find and collect various items ranging from skeletal remains to snakes, and if they’re lucky enough, they might even discover one of their coveted ghostly children!
Horrified: Universal monsters mystery game
If you’re a giant fan of the Universal Monster-verse and iconic movies such as The Mummy, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and more, then this game is right up your alley! This Hasbro manufactured board game invites players to escape the clutches of popular monsters and villains such as The Phantom of the Opera, avoid being turned into vampires and werewolves, and explore the depths of Black Lagoon on a quest to find the monster or explore the ancient Egyptian crypts if they dare. It is a simple spin and move game with cards and play pieces featuring your favorite monsters. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to play this game since it doesn’t involve too much strategy with a straightforward layout with only slight detours. The gorgeous vintage artwork also makes it a collector’s item.
Haunted House
Players make their way through a detailed, 3-dimensional plastic model of the titular haunted house to reach the attic that houses an all-important jewel that will help them escape the haunted mansion they find themselves trapped within. They can open secret doors or use the lever on a hooting owl slot machine spinner to find the attic.
TIME stories
This board game combines elements of sci-fi and paranormal. Players must travel back in time to fix various events throughout history, and missions range from rescuing 80s Hollywood from a plague on ghosts at unrest to playing as a pirate on a quest thwarting supernatural forces in 1685 and attempting to figure out the cause behind a strange epidemic that is plaguing 90s America (& no, I’m not talking about COVID here).
Paranormal detectives
The rules of this game are simple- Players attempt to figure out the last wish of the troubled ghost that’s haunting them so it can find peace and move on into the afterlife.
Ghost Hunters!
This is a classic roll, spin, and move board game disguised as a 3D pop-up book. Players take on roles of ghost hunters on the lookout to collect some ghostly entities at a mysterious castle, rolling the dice and hoping to land on one of the ghost squares. Most of the ghosts have values of 1-2, but if you catch the super ghost (value of 10), you can instantly end the game. The player who collects the most ghosts wins. But beware of landing on the squares featuring traps, as these can set you back.
